A DoD Programming Environment and Training (PET) project has produced software infrastructure for coupled modeling. The project is a collaborative effort with John Michalakes at the NCAR MMM division (project leader), Al Hermann and Chris Moore at the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), Rob Jacob at the DOE Argonne National Laboratory, Matt Bettencourt at Southern Mississippi University and Dan Schaffer at NOAA/FSL. The software is a coupling implementation of the WRF I/O Application Programming Interface (API) using the Argonne Model Coupling Toolkit (MCT). The details of the infrastructure and results when using it to couple WRF to the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) ocean model are described in the 2003 PET project report . The MCT I/O Coupling API is available in a library form, suitable for download and complete with small regression tests. Start with the README file it contains.
